The perfect plate doesn’t have to cost a fortune

Friday 26th February, 2010 Blog Home 0 comments

Do you happen to have seven million pounds going spare? If the answer is no then the most expensive number plate ever sold may not be for you.  Saeed Abdul Ghaffer Khouri bought the plate, adorned only with the number 1, in Abu Dhabi for this record amount.

Or if seven is a bit out of your reach how about £3.5million? The number 5 plate was sold in Dubai to a bidder who said the number held no significance to him. But even if you don’t have millions to splash out with, a personalised plate is well within your grasp. Starting from as little as £100 you can purchase a plate that will give your car a whole new persona.

There is a hugely diverse choice of plates out there, which is reflected by the immense range in prices.

Cherished plates can easily fetch up to hundreds of thousands of pounds when sold due to their rarity and the growing demand for individuality. But if you do your research and check out all your options then you will easily find a reasonably priced plate that is perfect for you. Often the most sought-after, and highly valued, plates are ones made up of two initials and a single number. A perfect example of this being GS 1 which sold for £258,775 in Scotland in 2005 and will have continued to rise in worth over the past few years. HRH Queen Elizabeth II is driven on her royal duties in A 7, which was originally released in 1903. Afzal Khan, owner of bespoke car company Khan Design, purchased F1 for £440,000 in 2008 and is the most expensive plate traded within the UK to date.

Many choose to purchase a plate that reflects a name, date or important word. A birthday or marriage date can be represented or if you prefer to have a word then you may decide on a name, hobby or favourite sport.

Why not follow the example of comedian Jimmy Tarbuck and magician Paul Daniels by displaying your profession on your car plates. The pair have COM 1C and MAG 1C plates. Boxer Amir Khan shows he won’t be messed with by picking a BOX 111G plate. Sticking with the profession theme hairdresser Nicky Clarke drives around with a constant advert for himself thanks to his H4I RDO plates. Manchester United and England footballer Wayne Rooney, nicknamed ‘Wazza, paid over £10,000 for his WAZ 8 plate. If you have a nickname you’d like to display to help your car stand out from the crowd then there will be a plate out there for you for far less than Rooney paid.
